About Professor Rosenblum

Professor Norman Rosenblum is a distinguished developmental nephrologist, clinician-scientist, and research leader whose work bridges molecular biology, clinical care, and national research strategy.

He is Professor of Paediatrics, Physiology, and Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto, Senior Scientist at SickKids, and a practicing pediatric nephrologist. His laboratory investigates the genetic and molecular mechanisms that regulate normal and disrupted kidney development, focusing on signaling pathways including Transforming Growth Factor Beta, Sonic Hedgehog, and Integrin-linked kinase.

His research addresses one of the leading causes of childhood renal failure: maldevelopment of the kidney and urinary tract. Through more than 110 peer-reviewed publications, his group has contributed models and mechanistic understanding that inform diagnosis, disease prevention, and therapeutic strategy.

Beyond laboratory science, Professor Rosenblum has played a defining role in shaping clinician-scientist education. As Associate Dean for Physician Scientist Training at the University of Toronto, he directed MD/PhD and Clinician Investigator Programs and strengthened national training pathways for translational leaders.

Professor Rosenblum is Scientific Director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes, Canada’s federal health research investment agency. In this role, he leads national research priorities, develops funding strategies, builds partnerships, and advances translation of scientific evidence into policy and practice.

As a Founding Member of the EUREKA Institute for Translational Medicine, he brings deep experience in research governance, translational training, and system-level strategy to the global community.

Key Highlights:

  • Leader in Molecular and Developmental Nephrology

  • Scientific Director, CIHR Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes

  • Tier I Canada Research Chair in Developmental Nephrology

  • Architect of National Physician-Scientist Training Programs

  • Senior Scientist at SickKids and Practicing Pediatric Nephrologist

  • Award-Winning Researcher and Mentor

Professor Rosenblum believes that the future of medicine depends on scientists who understand both mechanism and system. He advances fundamental biology while shaping the structures that allow research to influence policy, training, and care.
